This Weekend We...

...we went to the pool, on Saturday, and to El Dorado State Park on Sunday. This was probably the first time that I've been to a swimming pool in maybe a decade. It's not too exciting a prospect for pasty, out of shape old man to go to the YMCA, but Jennifer and Desmond were thrilled with idea. So we went to the new YMCA on the far west side of town. It's really nice, as those places go, and they have a big swimming area. It's not just a pool...there's slides and fountains and all the water park-esque stuff. Anyway, we had been waiting for Desmond to take a nap so that we could go afterward, when he was fresh. But he refused to go down until the drive to the pool. By the time we arrived, he was completely zonked.

He was really out, but the sounds of all the other kids at the pool woke him up. He wasn't too keen on the idea of swimming at first. He doesn't like to be splashed, or to have water on his face. Luckily, the pool has a zero-entry transition so that we could just wade around wherever he felt comfortable.

The pool was fun, and eventually Desmond got used to the water and had a good time.

Sunday we went to El Dorado State Park for some hiking and a picnic. There is a pretty big lake there that is a local hot-spot for boaters and such. There are lakes that are closer to us, but we wanted to venture out on the other side of town. The lake and the picnic/camping areas are really very nice. And the park is big enough that you can have your own space while you're there. We went for a hike and then had a picnic lunch while we watched all the boats and jet skis. After we ate we found a nice spot next to the water with lots of rocks for Desmond to throw.
He kept trying to throw the biggest rocks that he could find. He had a good time...after all, throwing rocks into water is, like, the best thing in the world when you're a little boy. Kevin went too.To our surprise, he kept going into the water. Sometimes deep enough that he had to swim. The problem is that Kevin is the most pathetic swimmer that we have ever seen. He went out too far once and almost didn't make it back before he had one of his "asthma attacks." We had to rein him in a bit after that.

Pasty? Out of shape? I think your tan looks great. Make sure to tell Kevin that I have asthma attacks in the water all the time too. So he's not alone in his fear of shallow waters. (somehow my first comment got deleted)

Jeez Desmond, I guess you were zonked!! But I'm glad you found the strength to venture out into the terror of screaming, wet children though!!
Hank and Scout say..."Kevin, the water's our friend too, until the groung disappears! It's ok, we understand!"

I don't know why your comment was deleted Hoop. But thanks for making me feel a little more comfortable about my tan.

It's too bad that I didn't get video of Kevin trying to swim...it was the most pathatic display of aquatic skills ever. He did okay until, like Dawn says, "...the ground disappears," then he resorts to flailing panic.

I'm not scared of water, I'm scared of drowning.
