Bum Leg

D broke his leg...pretty badly.

The day that it happened was terrible, but he was very brave and much stronger than we would have ever expected him to be. He was in a lot of pain, and it took a long time for him to get any relief. He had to go to two doctors locally before we were sent to KC to the Children's Mercy Hospital. He broke it at around noon and didn't get any real pain meds until after 8 PM when we finally were admitted to the hospital by the orthopedic surgeon. He had surgery the following morning after a very restless night. Luckily the surgery was not the "cut you open and insert hardware" type, but rather the "put you under so they can manipulate the fracture and build the cast" type of surgery. Still, he was put under, had a breathing tube and tubes out of both arms...very disturbing. After surgery the pain was markedly lessened, and we were discharged several hours later. He is in a hip spica cast...shown here in it giving a "thumbs down".

D is not in any significant pain now, and is only really disturbed with the position and lack of mobility that he must resign himself to. He gets lots of attention and time to watch movies. He'll get his cast off after six weeks, and should be up to snuff a few weeks after that. The doctors expect him to heal completely and should have no lingering effects. That is, of course, what we are hoping, and are doing our best to make sure he doesn't stray from the path to recovery.

Emma has been good and very understanding of the attention that has been paid to her bro.

Good Lord! How did he manage that break? We're glad he's doing okay. His strength, courage, and endurance bode well for the future of the Revolution.
Alright,
M&M&E.

D broke his leg while at daycare. He was running and fell. Yeah, the story doesn't really jibe with the severity of the injury. It's partly because of that that we were sent to the hospital that we were. The Children's Hospital has the child protection personnel on site to begin an investigation when an injury like this comes in. So they did interviews with us as well as the daycare employees. And they took x-rays of every bone in his body (to check for prior or other existing injuries). The investigation yielded nothing in the way of abuse or neglect at the daycare--which is what we expected--and the only real result is that the daycare will have to attend first responder training because they poorly diagnosed the severity of the injury.

Anyway, D is doing well...perhaps getting a little (that is to say a lot) spoiled. He's starting to try to crawl around in his cast, and seems to be free of pain.

That is one heck of a break! It's unbelievable that D. had to go 8 hrs. without pain relief! I'm sure he'll find ways to get around and be active in spite of that awful cast. We'll be thinking about him!
