A Month...Already?

A month between posts is too long. But, once again, my excuse is being too busy. It's amazing how many fun things there are to do for Halloween. For instance, Desmond and Pops got to go to the pumpkin patch with Desmond's preschool class. Pops took the whole day off, and we spent the day together.

First there was the pumpkin patch...the second one that we've been to this year. We met the rest of the class there, and they pretty much just set us loose on the place. It was fun. There were lots of things for the kids to play on. A big bouncy inflatable thing, a huge slide, a zip line, a regular old playground, big trikes, a corn box (similar to a sand box), tractor wagon rides... We opted out of the corn maze, and we got to at leaset hear the big pumpkin cannon a time or two.

When we went to the actual pumpkin patch one of D's friends was there with us. They had fun running around together...thankfully no pumpkins were smashed.

We got our pumpkins and went to Freddy's for lunch. After lunch we went to a movie. It was the animated owl movie...Legend of the Guardians, I think. It was in 3-D. This is the second 3-D movie Desmond and Pops have been to, and D really likes them. I was worried that he wouldn't keep the glasses on for the whole movie, but he does. He thinks it's cool...I noticed him trying to touch some of the things popping out of the screen a time or two. Since this movie we've gone to a third 3-D movie. The whole family went to Megamind this weekend. Emma was not as good with the glasses as Desmond is.

After the movie D and I went and picked up Emma early from daycare. We went to the park and ran around.

We spent some time on the tire swing.

We played on the teeter-totter. There are at least two things to notice in the above photo: Desmond learned how take advantage of leverage by adjusting his seating position, and Emma is being a daredevil...as usual.

What a super fun day. Definitely better than working.

As another Halloween outing we went to church for the party and trunk-or-treat. It was the standard party with games and treats, although it was not very well attended this year. Though that's not to take anything away from the fact that D, E and Mom won an award for best family theme costumes.

They were dalmatian dogs.

Also, trunk-or-treat got rained out, and we had to do it in the gym...bummer.

Next we went to "Boo at the Zoo". It was a special event at the zoo for Halloween with games and candy...strangely we didn't get to see many of the animals.

We met one of D's friends (and his family) from daycare there. It was pretty fun...at least for the kids, I think. There were about a zillion people there...it was overrun. The parents spent the whole time just trying to make sure that their kids didn't step into the crowd and disappear. It was stressful. I could see where it would be fun if about half of the people wouldn't have shown up. We made it through though, and went out and got tacos afterward.

And then there was pumpkin carving.

Of course we carved pumpkins. Emma's was the biggest and the flashiest. Mom's was sad for some reason. Desmond's was a spider. And in keeping with tradition, Pop's was scary.

Then there was the big day...Halloween!

It was maybe the tenth time that the kid's costumes were worn, and the zipper on D's finally gave out. He had to go door-to-door with his costume safety-pinned together.

For some reason Desmond got it into his head that Pops should dress up as a bat for Halloween. I figured I'd be a good sport and throw something together. I sewed some wings onto an old sweatshirt, and I made some big ears and attached them to an old stocking cap. Though maybe not exactly consistent with the bat theme, I went to one of those Halloween outlet stores and got some scary rubber hands with claws on them. Emma did not like those at first.

We stayed in our neighborhood. I'm always surprised to see how so few of the houses have their porch lights on in our neighborhood...maybe one in ten. But we got plenty of candy. We just have to do a little more walking to get it. By the end of our night the kids were being carried home, but there is always enough energy to check out how much candy we got.

Other things to report include Emma's first pig tail hair style. She likes them very much. She can swing her head from side-to-side and her hair hits her on the face.

Finally, Desmond in in "Little Dribblers". Yeah, soccer ended and basketball started. His basketball is only for four-year-olds, and they only practice. They stretch out and then work on fundamentals like dribbling, shooting and passing.

Here they're working on defense. They get into position and then "smash bugs" with their feet to stay light on their feet.

There's a lot of standing in line as the other kids practice, so it is sometimes easy to get distracted. But D does very good...I think he likes dribbling the best.

See, that's a lot of stuff. That's probably why the month between posts went so fast...I'll try to do better though.
