I didn't get a chance to share what we did for the 4
th of July yet...We had a pretty good day. Cheney State Park is west of town, and includes a big man made lake. It is popular among the water sports crowd. We went out there for lunch and to throw rocks into the water. Both were a success. I think that is was because of the
forecasted bad weather, but the park was decidedly not overcrowded. We managed to get a covered picnic table right on the water where we could watch the boats and the jet-skis as we ate.

It was pretty hot that day, which was a welcome change from the uncharacteristically heavy rain that we had been having. We ate, threw rocks, and mostly just enjoyed the day. Later, we moved over to one of the beach areas nearby on
the lake. None of us are much for swimming, but we wanted to let Desmond play on the beach...pick up sharp stuff, throw sand everywhere, try to ignore the fat guys with their butt crack showing, you know all the fun stuff that a public beach has to offer on a holiday. Mostly went to the beach to meet a friend of mine from work who was out there on his new jet ski. The beach was the best landmark by which to find us. After a short visit we headed home, sand-covered and tired.
That evening we had a BBQ, and shot off some fireworks that we had bought. Jennifer was the Master of Ceremonies and lit all the fireworks and sang patriotic songs. We shot ours off early so that Desmond could witness their glory, and it was good that we did. Just as we finished it started to rain pretty heavily, and everyone that was now shooting off their fireworks was chased inside.
Desmond's reaction to the fireworks: Not Impressed. He was non-plussed by the tradition. Maybe he was tired, but he just sat and watched. Some of the louder fireworks startled him...otherwise, no big deal.
Before bed we made
Shmores (as Jen calls them) and sat eating them on the porch while the rain come down.
This is a picture of Desmond in his 4
th of July, red, white and blue shirt early in the day...Kevin's was dirty.

Jen had the 5
th of July off of work (I did not), so she took the boy to the zoo...Some photos.

It sounds like they had fun.

The boy and I have similar opinions when it comes to the idea of fireworks..... OVERRATED. It's sounds like he had a fun couple of days though. I must comment on the fact that I have the exact same shirt your modeling in the first pic. It's an excellent vintage look that can only be pulled of by those brave enough to include aviator shades to complete the outfit.
No one can pull off aviator shades like Hoop! He's my inspiration. Thanks for noticing my style Hoop.
Desmond, just wait a few years and you'll be soooo excited for fireworks...especially when they blow up in your hand and you can light off 100 Black Cats at once...your dad will be able to show you how it's done. You and Kevin look like the best of buddies...it's good to know Our Leader has such devoted security.
Looks like lots to do in that town - and you didn't think you would like it.
I speak for lots of people to say we all miss the 4 of you.
Mark
Hey Dawn, I let those blow up in my hands on purpose...It's all part of the show.
And Mark...Thanks for the comment. I was wondering if you were checking the blog. There are many of our friends that we miss back in Nebraska, and we hope we can keep in touch. Mark is sorely missed by Kevin...his treat intake is dwindling.
Good pics...glad you all had fun. Still trying to picture the barbecue with Jen singing patriotic songs! Have you seen everything in Wichita and surrounding areas already? Thanks for the card and photo, Desmond! Made Grandma cry....Mary.
I'm jealous that you guys were allowed to let off fireworks! It is banned here in Olathe Kansas. I'm sure it has something to do with the snobby rich Johnson County community....those suckers. Anyway hope to get together one of these weekends...it's really not that far. We drove down there last month and it didn't take us to long.
Hi Aimee and Jayballs. What kind of communist suburb do you live in that would ban fireworks? If you were true patriots you would have lit off a few ladyfingers anyway...damn those Nazis worried about bottle rockets starting their roofs on fire.
