It seemed cruel at first that the elder McDonald predicted Desmond would "just ruin" the marshmallows, but given that D clearly confused roasting marshmallows with forging steel, it seems that father really did know best.

My statement was based on having seen D's method of marshmallow roasting earlier that evening...not from any lack in confidence in his ability. And the reason I said it was because we were beginning to run low on marshmallows because D would "burn it away" and immediately insist that we re-load his stick. Only chocolate could distract him from this viscous cycle...it was our good luck that we were fat with chocolate. I can't imagine the horror that we would have witnessed should D's attention not have been taken off of destruction...burning...For the love of Pete, he "burned it away"! That sort of hunger for ruin cannot be satiated by mere marshmallows. Chocolate, yes.
